Volatiles Lighting is a Berlin-based lighting technology company that started in 2015. Volatiles lighting’s combines traditional glass mosaic tiles with modern LED technology. The company creates sophisticated smart surface illuminations for design and light enthusiasts.

Volatiles are unique, ultra-thin LED modules. About the size of your palm, they are no thicker than a matchbox. Hidden from view behind a sophisticated glass mosaic, they create tantalizing light scenes for your home or office space. The brand name volatiles is a combination of vola (made-up word based on the meaning of fying, moving quickly or foating) and tiles to emphasize the combination of sophisticated glass mosaic and dynamic LED lighting.

Volatiles Digital Glass Mosaic is a modular surface illumination composed of glass mosaic. Each lighting module consists of 64 individual mosaic tiles, each lit by one LED chip. These modules can be arranged individually and therefore create a personalized lighting experience for every user. Volatiles modules can display a myriad of colors on each single tile.

Moreover, each tile is also sensitive to touch, so users can modify the color at their fingertips, or use their hands to draw patterns on the illuminated mosaic wall.

Project Summary.

Volatiles Lighting was looking for an expert IoT Development Company who can provide a full-integrated solution including design and development of frontend iOS and Android apps as well as backend services development to communicate with their hardware devices. The company hired TechAhead after a detailed evaluation process. TechAhead core focus on mobile apps and IoT development made it a perfect match for the project. TechAhead was rated highly and showed applicable experience.

Challenges & Solutions.

The project required development of complex lighting patterns with advanced haptic feedback to create touch sensitive lighting effects., which was a challenge to achieve with conventional embedded boards such as Amtel.

We used MiniZed 7Z007S development board for prototyping the advanced light effects for Volatile lightings. MiniZed gave us the required bandwidth and hardware playground to prototype and develop the advanced effects and interfacing options.

Solution approach.

MiniZed featured a single core Zync 7Z007S processor with inbuilt wireless LAN and bluetooth 4.1 adaptor. Board also features advanced interface which are inbuilt such as motion and temperature sensor and a digital microphone.

Such advanced options allowed us to focus more on the development and prototyping, rather putting more efforts in solving the hardware interfacing and integration setup.

TechAhead created a fully integrated smartphone app for iOS and Android platform to control and facilitate management of the Volatile lighting system. The app is equipped with 15 preinstalled light scenes to give the mosaic surface a new design at a click.

The app allows user to seamlessly select from a multitude of different light scenes and adjust its settings for your perfect light experience. Choose from a library of dynamic light scenes as well as static unicolor scenes. You can adjust the brightness, color temperature, the speed of light scenes, tweak the background color of certain light scenes and activate or deactivate touch sensor functionality.

The system uses the ubiquitous WIFI-standard (WLAN 802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz) for data communication and is encrypted for safety.

The end product has been honoured with several awards including German Innovation Winner 2018, Digital Plus Winner 2018, System AwardWinner 2017 and Trend Product of the Year 2017/18.
