Just before the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, world’s most popular cricketing tournament,
ICC launched the first edition of Criiio Cup, a global social cricket movement involving 6 nations:
Brazil, Rwanda, Germany, England, Indonesia, and India. Cricket fans from these nations were
invited to share their images playing cricket, in their unique way. The cricket teams that enabled
maximum impact in their respective communities were invited to play the game in London.
The International Cricket Council or ICC is the world governing body of cricket and is the
world’s 2nd biggest sports federation with 102 member nations. They wanted a mobile app
that enabled cricket fans to play the game the way they wanted. With the concept of Criiio
Cup, ICC wanted the game to be more popular, and provide a new platform for
community-based cricket, without any boundaries or limitations.
Since ICC wanted more and more cricket fans to play the game, create their own templates of
the game and share their images of playing cricket, the design had to be simple, minimalistic
yet action-oriented. The design was expected to trigger action and engagement.
ICC wanted a simple, seamless, and delightful user experience that removed all hassles from
the main motive of the app: To enable fans to play community-based cricket without any rules.
Since the majority of the audience was non-tech-savvy, the user experience that was needed
was simple to the core.
Total cricket fans from the 6 nations who were participating in the Criiio Cup numbered
millions, and this is the reason ICC wanted a powerful technology stack that can support such
massive numbers. ICC wanted that no cricket fan should face any tech-related issues while
using the app, irrespective of the smartphone model, and internet connectivity.
In order to deliver an app for Criiio Cup, we needed advanced, powerful, and scalable
servers, along with a deeply engaging design for ensuring optimal user experience. We
brainstormed ideas with ICC, understood the core ideology behind this unique
cricketing tournament, and the underlying social impact.
Using a combination of JSON, JavaScript, Angular, jQuery & HTML, we conceptualized and
designed a front end of the app that encouraged action and inspired engagement. With
minimalistic design elements, we created a platform wherein cricket fans from 6 nations can
choose their own templates for playing the game, create their own rules and form their own
groups and communities for playing the game. With features such as Leader Board and
Rankings, we triggered community play and encouraged more action.
Sharing & uploading images were the key feature that formed the foundation of the Criiio Cup
mobile app. To ensure that users are able to click and upload their pics without any hassles,
we deployed Microsoft Azure Storage as the one-shop stop for a data storage solution. Once
connected with Blob Storage, the app allows users to create and update or delete data
within the blobs of their respective databases.
We relied on Microsoft’s Azure Database for storing all the data at one location and deployed
the amazing scalability of Amazon AWS Cloud for limitless expansion. Features such as Azure
Virtual Machines, Azure Static ID, and Azure SQL Database, we made adequate plans to
expand this mobile app’s usage, ad to support millions of concurrent users.
