iOS 6 Vs Windows Phone 8 Vs Blackberry 10: A Comparison

With Blackberry making a comeback in the arena of Operating System with BlackBerry 10, many have started questioning its competency. With Windows having their latest OS Windows 8 being launched recently and the iOS 6.1 already giving a round of the markets, the question did not seem quite irrelevant. The smart phones we use today are not only a much upgraded version of what cellular devices used to be even a couple of decades back, with their unique features and better performances.

While some of the manufacturers like LG, Nokia or BlackBerry itself are finding the path to success, difficult to tread along, others like Samsung, Apple or Google are working out miracles for themselves.

As for the users, with all these three OS being used by numerous mobile devices, one mustn’t get astonished if he is confused about, which OS to go for. A comparison can be of real help.

Messaging

The iOS6 users have iMessage, the messaging app which can run on any iOS device, as well as on Mac OS X devices. Allows users to send texts, documents, photos, videos, contact information, and group messages over Wi-Fi, 3G or LTE to other iOS or OS X users, thus providing an alternative to standard SMS/MMS messaging for all users with devices running iOS 5 or later. Available through Messages app in iOS.

However, even with the BlackBerry 10 BBM is still the king. It now comes with the exciting BlackBerry Hub. Every single message received by the phone is stored in here. Even the missed calls and emails pop up in the Hub. Moreover, you can even use your Facebook or Twitter accounts apart from the BBM account to access the Hub.

With Windows 8 it is still the old school style of separate apps for each of them, texts, third party messaging, emails etc. The additional feature is the Windows Live Messenger. It comes with the Microsoft-owned Skype package. Thus it can be said that, with the messaging app, none of the three OS are bad.

The Internet

The IE (Internet Explorer) 10 is what the Windows 8 OS has brought with it, as the latest web browser.  On the other hand iOS uses the desktop browser in a smaller version to fit the mobile screen.

The new browser offered by the BlackBerry10 is somewhat similar to the IE in appearance and offers every single feature like reader modes and bookmarks. As far as the speed is concerned, the BB10 offers quite an impressive fast speed.

The Camera

The camera app of Microsoft Windows 8 OS is simpler and its settings can be accessed with the help of a small menu key.  The setting of the iOS6, on the other hand are sorted automatically thereby making it easier to focus, without the need of disturbing the iOS modes. You can also specify a particular area to be focused by tapping on the screen. Otherwise the focus is automated. The keys used to adjust the  volume can be used as the physical shutter.

The camera of the Blackberry 10 is though better equipped than others, it has lesser features. and hence is not that interesting. Yet, with a good shutter speed and in-built edit settings, the camera can be given sufficient points. The volume keys can again work as physical shutter.

The Apps

There is no doubt an individual who is crazy about mobile apps, will go for an iOS 6 system. It offers a large range of choices from Google Play as well as App Store. To count, there are about 70000 apps that each of these offers. Thus, it can be said that the BlackBerry 10 and Windows 8 OS are lagging behind as far as mobile apps are concerned. Moreover, even among those available, the big shot apps names are missing. However, taking into consideration that the Blackberry 10 has just been launched, one can afford to give it a chance for later improvements.

The Maps

Users were more than astonished to find that the Windows 8 is not using the trademark Microsoft map partner, i.e. Bing maps. It is rather using the Nokia mapping system, where one can enjoy navigating through the streets in the 3D format, giving the user a realistic experience. It is coupled with the Navteq Traffic Service, from Nokia again.

Though the iOS previously used the Google mapping system initially, with the sixth version of the operating system, they have switched to the newly launched Apple Maps. Quite astonishingly and unexpectedly the Apple Maps fell flat on the face. Not only was it unable to match up the hype, it was rather a disgusting experience, with wrong location marking. Google Maps is now available as now available as an App though.

On the other hand BlackBerry 10 uses the Maps app from TomTom. Though it offers a lighter design and features, it is as well serviceable as the mapping system of Windows 8.

The maps offer good details about the locations, but are not as polished as Google maps. Also, neither do they offer satellite overviews, nor any view of the streets or flyovers. It comes with lesser features.

Verdict

There is no clear winner here, all have advantages and disadvantages when compared with others. Apple lovers will go for iOS devices and it has a great advantage with biggest number of Apps availability as well. However if you are looking for a change, Windows Phone 8 or BlackBerry 10 could be a god change. BlackBerry 10 is a good update for those who loved BBM but felt the OS was getting outdated. Windows Phone 8 with its simpler design and Live tiles can be good choice for people looking for simpler but yet powerful OS. It all comes down to personal choice, and hence we will leave it on you to decide.
