Common UX Pitfalls to Avoid While Doing Mobile App Design

Few days ago we did a post on Best Tools for Mobile Interaction/UX Design of Native Apps. That post got good response and one of our friend who read the post, asked us regarding the common mistakes that are made while designing User Experience of a mobile app. We thought that it is a common question, and many people would want to know the common pitfalls that should be avoided while doing mobile app design, and decided to do a post on the same topic. Here it is. Find below few of the most common UX pitfalls to avoid:

1) Scale down desktop design: Many app designers, in order to preserve “branding” and minimize expenses, try to maintain the appearance of their app on the web or desktop. They end up delivering unfamiliar UX to user, and it does more harm than good. App designers need to understand that mobile apps are used differently than websites/desktop apps, and hence should be designed differently.

2) Making Users Wait: Mobile users are generally multitasking while using apps, and they would like the mobile app to solve its purpose as swiftly and efficiently as possible. Stuff like Splash-screens or animations, which take too long to load are one of the biggest pain points in using a mobile app, and will make the user searching for a faster alternative.

3) Giving a non-native feel: Having a consistent visual identity across web and mobile is important, but don’t let this translate into a degraded mobile experience. Also, there is nothing more troublesome to the user than finding an Android app designed to be an exact replica of its iOS counterpart. Follow HIG (Human Interface Guidelines) available for the platform and try to use them as much as possible in your design.

4) Over Explaining things to New Users: It is a well known fact that information without context is hard to digest, and very easy to forget. If the user experience requires explanation, prompt the user when he/she is using the feature in question. Never flood new users with a detailed tutorial about everything your app can do on the very first launch, or else many will be using the app for the last time.

5) Not continuously testing on the device: When designing a mobile app user experience, it is critical to continually view and interact with your design on the device itself. Make sure the UX is as you intended it to be. Or else you will suddenly find that everything is of different size, that button you thought was perfectly place can’t be reached with a human thumb, the button at the bottom is not visible at all, etc. Always validate your app design on real device.
